When we visit the palace gardens we will also visit the Hamlet (have you seen pictures?) It was built by Marie-Antoinette and she would go there and pretend to be a poor shepherdess. Meanwhile, outside the palace gates, the masses of French people didn't have enough money to buy bread. (You can see why she was disliked and eventually beheaded in the French Revolution).
ReplyDeleteTo her defense, she wasn't necessarily a bad person, she was just very young. I believe Marie- Antoinette was only 13 when she married Louis the 17th of France. And Marie-Antoinette was an Austrian princess who knew nothing of the hardships of being a peasant.
