Facts about Versailles


  • Built in 1624 as a hunting lodge for Louis XII 
  • By 1774 it had: 2,143 windows, 67 staircases and was home to 1,000 servants. 
  • The palace is built around its beautiful gardens. 
  • The gardens cover 3 square miles.
  • The sculptures in the garden get covered in the winter. 
  • The Treaty of Versailles was one of the many peace treaties that ended World War I.
